Tennessee GOP lawmakers say ban on gender-affirming care protects children

GOP lawmakers gathered at Collegedale City Hall on Monday morning to discuss their belief that Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors — currently being challenged by the federal government before the U.S. Supreme Court — protects children.

"Fundamentally, that was our objective with the legislation that we passed," said state Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, R-Franklin, "to protect children from these gender reassignment surgeries and the use of very harmful prescription medications that can result in a lifetime of health implications for children."

Senate Bill 1, passed by the Tennessee legislature in 2023, prohibits health care professionals from prescribing hormone treatments or facilitating medical procedures related to gender identity for transgender minors. Johnson sponsored the bill in the Tennessee Senate.
